The People Refusing to Give Up on Pinetown
Every week, while most of Pinetown goes about its daily routine, a dedicated group of volunteers rolls up their sleeves and gets to work. They clear litter from roadsides, remove illegal dumping, restore neglected public spaces and prove, through action rather than words, that Pinetown is worth fighting for.
What started as a grassroots effort has grown into one of the most visible examples of community action in the area. Today, Pinetown Tidy Town is helping restore pride in the town, one clean-up at a time.
More importantly, it is reminding us of a simple truth: the future of a neighbourhood is not determined by municipalities, developers or businesses alone. It is shaped by the people who live in it and choose to care.
Turning Pinetown Pride Into Action
Formerly known as Keep Pinetown Beautiful, Pinetown Tidy Town was founded in 2022 by local residents Zane Welensky and Sherryl Galvin.
Their mission was simple: create a cleaner, safer and more welcoming Pinetown.
What began as a handful of committed residents has evolved into a recognised community movement supported by volunteers, local businesses and residents who share a common goal. Through weekly clean-ups, environmental awareness campaigns and beautification projects, the organisation works throughout the year to improve the public spaces that shape everyday life.
The results are visible across the town.
Areas once neglected have been cleaned and maintained. Illegal dumping sites have been cleared. Public spaces have been restored. Yet perhaps the organisation's greatest achievement cannot be measured in bags of litter removed or verges maintained.
It is the renewed sense of ownership and neighbourhood pride that its work has inspired.
Pinetown Tidy Town demonstrates what can happen when ordinary people stop waiting for someone else to solve a problem and decide to become part of the solution themselves.
A Town Worth Investing In
Pinetown has long been one of Durban's most established residential and commercial hubs. Its family-friendly suburbs, schools, sporting facilities and convenient location continue to make it an attractive place to live, work and raise a family. For many residents, it is more than just a town. It is home.
Like many urban centres, however, Pinetown has faced its share of challenges. Litter, illegal dumping and the deterioration of certain public spaces have affected the appearance of parts of the town and raised concerns among residents and businesses alike.
What has emerged in response is something encouraging: a community unwilling to accept decline as inevitable.
Pinetown Tidy Town has become a symbol of that determination. Every clean-up, every restored public space and every volunteer who gives up their time sends a powerful message that Pinetown is a town worth investing in, protecting and improving.
More Than a Sponsorship
For Shelley Residential, supporting Pinetown Tidy Town since its inception, has always been about more than sponsorship. It reflects a belief that everyone who lives, works, owns property or operates a business in Pinetown shares a responsibility for the future of the town.
"We believe every homeowner, resident and business operating in Pinetown has an obligation to play a role in making our community a better place," says Scott Allnatt, Co-Founder of Shelley Residential. "It is easy to point out problems. It is far more valuable to become part of the solution. Pinetown Tidy Town has shown what can be achieved when people take ownership of their surroundings, and that is something we are proud to support."
For Shelley Residential, supporting the initiative is both a community responsibility and an investment in the future of their business.
"We sell homes throughout this area, so the success of Pinetown is directly linked to the success of our business and the people we represent," says Allnatt. "Clean streets, maintained public spaces, and visible community pride create safer, more attractive neighbourhoods. They encourage investment, strengthen buyer confidence, support local businesses and help protect the long-term value of homes and commercial property. Quite simply, what is good for Pinetown is good for our clients, our community and our business."
While cleaner streets may be the most visible outcome of Pinetown Tidy Town's work, the benefits run much deeper. Their efforts help strengthen neighbourhood pride, encourage community participation, attract investment and create an environment where people want to live, work and build their future.
Everyone Has a Role to Play
Despite everything that has been achieved, maintaining and improving Pinetown cannot rest on the shoulders of a few dedicated volunteers alone. Pinetown Tidy Town needs all residents, businesses and property owners to contribute in whatever way they can. Some volunteer their time. Others make monthly financial contributions. Many simply take ownership of the spaces closest to their homes and workplaces.
"Over the past few years, we've seen what is possible when people get involved," says Welensky. "The support we've received from residents, businesses and volunteers has enabled us to tackle ongoing challenges and improve public spaces. The more people who participate, the greater the impact we can make."
Every contribution matters. Whether it is supporting a clean-up initiative, maintaining a verge, sponsoring a project or encouraging neighbours to take pride in their surroundings, small actions can collectively create meaningful change.
Our Town, Our Responsibility
The future of Pinetown will not be shaped by infrastructure and development alone. It will be shaped by the choices its residents, businesses and community leaders make every day. Pinetown Tidy Town reminds us that great neighbourhoods do not happen by accident. They are built by people who care enough to get involved.
